After the rain comes the sunshine. And the day I left my hotel in Flensburg this saying become true. Just after 10 km that day I finally made it to the first border crossing and I arrived with pure sunshine in Denmark. Land of the Hotdog and my home for the next 2-3 weeks.
While in the hotel I planned out the next weeks and I was very happy with myself. Only now after walking my planned days worth of kilometre I realised you can't push everyday. Especially if you don't know the weather and elevation. The big advantage of my "Walkie" is that I carry only my small Camelbak with 3 Liters of water. On the flip side I have to push it up every hill. Of course I was aware of it but knowing about it and doing it are two completely different things.
But which way to I go?
The historical Haervejen Trail
In order to cross Denmark I follow roughly the Haervej Trail. Not only is Denmark full of (mostly) free-to-use shelters but also over 200 forests in which you can stay over night in your tent. The trail is a mix of a hiking and a cycling trail which follows roughly the same path. I usually choose either the fastest way or the nicer way. Depending of time and date but also the scenery. But what is the Hearvej Trail?
The Hærvej Trail, also known as the Ancient Road or Ox Road, is a historic long-distance hiking and cycling route that stretches approximately 500 kilometers (310 miles) through Denmark, from the German border in the south to Viborg or Hirtshals in the north. It follows an ancient trade and pilgrimage route used for centuries, passing through scenic landscapes, forests, heathlands, and charming towns.
The Hærvej is great for its blend of nature, culture, and history. Along the trail, travelers encounter Viking sites, medieval churches, burial mounds, and traditional Danish countryside. It’s well-marked, peaceful, and offers a unique way to experience Denmark off the beaten path—ideal for hikers and cyclists seeking both physical challenge and cultural enrichment.
